_Florence Elizabeth Bacabac
I earned my Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Writing from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. My dissertation reflects my interest in composition pedagogy and the use of collaborative invention tools in computer-mediated classrooms. My research interests include computers and writing, writing for interactive media, digital rhetoric and composition, first-year writing, professional/business and technical writing, writing across the curriculum, writing in the disciplines, community-engaged learning, second language writing, and women's rhetoric. I have done workshops and paper-presentations in professional conferences, such as NCTE, CCCC, ABC, Computers and Writing, Watson, L2 Writing Symposium, Ohio TESOL, Utah Campus Compact, and Feminism(s) and Rhetoric(s).
I have been teaching professional and technical writing courses in English at Utah Tech University since 2008. In 2019, I began teaching at the English department's new MA program in technical writing and digital rhetoric and two years later, I was appointed coordinator of the English composition program. I organized a Women's Resource Center on campus in 2012-2013 (now expanded to the Student Resource Center with women and family services) and served as director for 9 years, while promoting resources, mentoring, and support to women across the disciplines for their academic and professional development.
In 2021, I received the Excellence in Education Award from the university Board of Trustees for my outstanding dedication and commitment to the campus community as faculty. I am also a three-time recipient of the Community Engaged Scholar Awards from Utah Campus Compact. These awards recognize an individual who teaches with experience in using service-learning as a successful pedagogy; innovation in employing reflective strategies to connect students' service with academics; and evidence of academic civic engagement through teaching, community-based research, and promotion of service-learning in one's discipline. I will continue to help various non-profit organizations in the city of St. George and Washington County as a grant writing specialist.
